Yeah, I'm still here, mostly lurking.

Questo mi fa sorridere. Bravo.

Dall'altra parte, stavo per dire ... no, no: inglese qui.

I was about to say that people who are obese are often so because of genetic
influences, which are difficult, if not impossible, to overcome.

I am officially "obese," according to my [dumb] doctor, as I weigh 198 pounds
and I'm not 8 feet tall. In fact, having attained the tender age of
71-and-a-half, I've managed somehow to have given in to gravity and shrunk
from 5'11" to 5'7".

What this means, of course, is that my BMI (Body Mass Index: stupid concept)
has risen each year, even though my weight has remained even, since my height
has decreased. My nonno and zii were all portly, what I think of as "sturdy
Sicilian and Calabrese stock" and I feel quite comfortable in my accurséd
obesity. The one time I forced myself to *dimagrire* (we need a word like
that in English) to my "ideal" weight of 175, I felt like a mimosa leaf: that
I could be *****n away by the slightest breeze. I was terribly uncomfortable
in my body until those blesséd 20 pounds returned.

Point being: one should not disparage a person due to his or her excess
weight.

On the intelligence side, specifically in the case of this contestant, I
can't help but wonder what world she lives in, where she apparently never
reads, or never has any interest in world affairs, or even the world outside
her (assumedly) small town.

(In fairness to her, the moderator mispronounces the country as "hungry" (not
"HungAry") as if on purpose to confuse her.)

Curiosity doesn't only kill cats: it elevates and expands the mind and it
stimulates more curiosity, especially for those of us who are
"tangentialists," people who likely start at point A of wonder, and end up at
a point much further down the alphabet, not necessarily sequencing through
B-C-D-E, etc., but jumping maybe along an A-J-R-M-L path (e.g.) as the nodes
direct us.

Yesterday I started thinking about air conditioners and in the same stream of
consciousness I ended up Googling the sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond," to
find the name of the actor who played his father.

So I'm not just another day older: with this recovered trivia, I'm an iota
wiser.

It happens sometimes (to me) to hear/read some ******* of new verb, just
putting the "to" in front of a noun. It would be so uncorrect to create
the verb "to slim", in this case?

(sorry in advance for my naivety, or any ******* of mistake)

No problem. The usual meaning of dimagrire is "to lose weight."
With "slim" the standard phrase is "to slim down": not one word.
I suppose you could say "I'm slimming," or "I need to slim," and you might be
understood, but it isn't a common phrase.

I remember Joseph Curtin: he is from New York and lives in Massachusetts. I'm
from Massachusetts and live in New York.

Maybe this pseudo-ping will draw him in again.

He and I were regular contributors a couple of decades ago.

I'm sorry to hear about your FB *******

There are about 10 Joseph/Joe Curtins on FB but given that their search
results are so poor, it's impossible to know if any of them is him.
